Paul Graham says he thinks Amazon is opening itself up to competitors.

In a Wednesday night X thread, Graham, the cofounder of tech VC firm Y Combinator, criticized Amazon's recent decision to block consumer AI agents from its platform.

It's the "first opportunity I've seen since Amazon was founded for a startup to create an Amazon competitor," he wrote.

"People will want agents to buy stuff for them. It will be one of the main use cases. And they won't want to use some Amazon-supplied agent to do it."

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk reposted the thread with a one-word endorsement: "Seriously."

Graham's post comes as Amazon clashes with Muse, Meta's consumer-focused AI agent that can complete multi-step tasks, like making purchases.

Amazon banned Muse from its marketplace, saying the agent didn't identify itself when shopping and appeared to capture and store customer credentials.

Meta has said Muse itself cannot see users' passwords or payment methods. The company says credentials a user shares are stored securely in Muse's dedicated cloud computer, rather than visible to the agent.

Graham's theory is that Amazon wouldn't bother blocking agents if shoppers didn't want to use them — but blocking the agents could come at Amazon's peril, he warned.

"Your usage restrictions are my opportunity."

The post also comes as AI companies are moving deeper into the consumer agent arena. In late September, OpenAI launched Dots, its Muse-like competitor. Amazon has not publicly said if it has blocked Dots.

Not everyone agrees with Graham. Imran Khan, the founder of investment management firm Proem Asset Management, wrote that Amazon likely believes that more agents shopping on their platform risks increasing costly returns and "completely mess up their unit economics."

Amazon is hardly sitting on the sidelines of the consumer AI race. It has its own shopping assistant, Rufus, and a "Buy for Me" feature that buys products from some outside brands.

Amazon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
