Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro on Wednesday, with prices starting at $1,199 in the US, and it lands in stores on September 18.

What is new on the iPhone 18 Pro

The iPhone 18 Pro brings four main hardware changes:

Some features carry over from last year. The iPhone 17 Pro already has a 6.3-inch display with ProMotion, an 18MP front camera, and 48MP rear cameras. Both phones support Apple Intelligence.

If you already own an iPhone 17 Pro, the camera controls are what deserve your attention. Screen size and camera resolution stayed the same, so those alone should not guide your decision.

Apple’s US store lists four storage options for the iPhone 18 Pro. These prices are for an outright purchase, before tax.

• 256GB: $1,199
• 512GB: $1,399
• 1TB: $1,799
• 2TB: $2,399

For comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 for 256GB and goes up to $2,499 for 2TB.

The iPhone 17 Pro launched at $1,099 for 256GB, so the new model costs $100 more at the same storage level.

Storage makes a big difference to your total bill. Moving from 256GB to 512GB adds $200. Choosing 2TB adds $1,200 to the entry price. Check how much space you actually use before you pick a storage size, and factor in any accessories you still need to buy.

Prices outside the US depend on Apple’s local pricing and taxes in that country. Converting the US price directly will not tell you what you will pay elsewhere.

iPhone 18 Pro specifications and features

The aluminium body measures 150 x 71.9 x 8.75mm and weighs 211g. Ceramic Shield 2 protects the front, and Ceramic Shield covers the back. You can choose from Black, Silver, Glacier, or Burgundy.

The iPhone 17 Pro has the same dimensions but weighs 206g, so the new model adds 5g. If you plan to reuse an old case, check with the accessory maker first. Matching body measurements do not always guarantee a fit.

The 6.3-inch OLED display has a 2622 x 1206 resolution, adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, and an always-on mode. Brightness reaches 3,000 nits outdoors and drops to 1 nit at its lowest setting.

The smaller Dynamic Island can show up to three Live Activities while still supporting Face ID.

Apple lists the same resolution and peak brightness for the iPhone 17 Pro, so the Dynamic Island update is the main display change this year. A store visit can help you judge whether it feels more useful daily.

The main camera now has four aperture settings. You also get an ultrawide and a telephoto camera.

• Main: 48MP, f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, or f/4.0 aperture
• Ultrawide: 48MP, 13mm equivalent, f/2.2
• Telephoto: 48MP, 100mm equivalent, 4x, f/2.8

Aperture controls how much light reaches the lens. A wider opening lets in more light and narrows the area that stays in focus. A smaller opening widens that area. This gives you more control over light and depth of field when you shoot.

Apple added manual shutter speed and white balance controls, plus an exposure histogram, for Pro camera use. The telephoto camera offers 8x optical quality framing at 200mm equivalent, though its native optical zoom is still 4x.

That difference matters if you compare camera systems by numbers alone. Look at sample images at the zoom level you plan to use, since lens specs alone cannot tell you how much detail your photos will hold.

On video, the iPhone 18 Pro records 4K Dolby Vision at up to 120fps and adds Cinematic effects you can apply after recording. It also shoots 4K HDR time-lapse. ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2, genlock, and other pro tools remain part of the toolkit.

A new Apple Reference Image feature records signed sensor data you can use to check an edited photo against the original. This capture option is not available in the EU at launch, and China also has launch restrictions. SynthID support arrives later in 2026.

A reference image can help you assess an edit. It cannot confirm where or when the original photo was taken, so treat that as separate evidence.

The 2nm A20 Pro chip has a six-core CPU and a seven-core GPU. It also runs 32 Neural Engine cores. Apple claims 50% more memory bandwidth and up to 40% faster graphics than the A19 Pro. The vapour chamber inside now has three times the cooling surface area.

These numbers come from Apple. Long gaming sessions and repeated video exports will show how well the chip and cooling system hold up over time, since a short benchmark cannot answer questions about heat or sustained performance.

Apple has not published a RAM figure for the iPhone 18 Pro. Treat any unofficial number you see online as unconfirmed.

Apple’s battery ratings vary by region. Here is how the US and Hong Kong figures compare.

• Video playback: up to 36 hours (US), up to 34 hours (Hong Kong)
• Streamed video: up to 33 hours (US), up to 31 hours (Hong Kong)
• Typical use: up to 24 hours (US), up to 23 hours (Hong Kong)

The iPhone 18 Pro Max goes further, with a US video rating of up to 45 hours.

Apple’s playback test loops a movie under fixed conditions, and its typical use test is based on median customer activity. Your own result will depend on your signal strength and the apps and settings you use.

Wired charging reaches 50% in about 15 minutes with a compatible 60W-capable AVS adapter. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging both top out at 25W.

AVS stands for Adjustable Voltage Supply. Apple’s fast-charge conditions call for USB Power Delivery 3.1 or suitable USB-C cable, so an adapter’s wattage rating alone doesn’t guarantee it meets those conditions.

For daily use, the question is whether a short charging break gets you through the rest of the day. Treat Apple’s charging time as a lab result and expect some variation depending on temperature and how you use your phone.

You can choose 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB. Your storage choice affects both your camera options and your price, so it is worth thinking through before you buy.

Apple notes that ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC video, and its support guidance covers recording to external storage on supported models. This matters if you plan to keep large video projects on your phone.

The iPhone 18 Pro supports ProRes at 4K120 with external recording.

Pick your storage based on your actual workflow. If you regularly move footage to a computer, you need less space than someone who keeps projects on the device for weeks. Before you pay extra for 1TB or 2TB, work out how much material you need to store between transfers.

The iPhone 18 Pro ships with iOS 27. Apple has scheduled the software update for September 14, ahead of the phone’s store release. The iPhone 17 Pro is also on the compatible device list.

Siri AI can pull information from across your apps to answer questions and complete tasks. Apple describes finding details in old emails and acting on whatever is on your screen. It also describes continuing conversations inside a dedicated Siri app. How well this works with other apps depends on developer support.

The beta rolls out in English starting September 14, with more languages scheduled for October.

The rollout has regional limits. Apple says the new assistant won’t be available on iPhones in the EU at launch. Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features also remain unavailable in China while regulators work out requirements. Photos gets Spatial Reframing to adjust a picture’s viewpoint and Extend to widen its edges. It also gets an upgraded Clean Up tool. These tools can change what appears in an image, so keep your original files if you need a record of a scene exactly as it happened.

Apple Intelligence runs partly on device and partly through Private Cloud Compute. Apple says it uses information processed this way only for your request and does not retain or make it accessible to Apple. This is Apple’s own description of how the system works.

Cloud-based AI access also comes with limits. Apple’s September 9 support notice says usage limits are coming, and that extra access will carry a fee. The notice does not give a fixed number of requests or a price for that extra access, so plan for possible limits and charges down the line.

If you already own a phone that supports Siri AI, access to the assistant alone is not a strong reason to upgrade.

The iPhone 18 Pro connects through Apple’s C2 modem, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and Ultra Wideband. Its USB-C port supports DisplayPort and USB 3 transfers up to 10Gbps.

US models use eSIM only. Hong Kong models support both nano-SIM and eSIM, so your SIM options depend on where you buy the phone.

An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets your carrier activate service without a physical card. Confirm your carrier supports your device before you import a phone from another market.

The same caution applies to network speed. A modem spec cannot tell you what speed you will actually get at your address, so check local coverage and your carrier’s support before comparing imported and locally sold models.

The iPhone 18 Pro carries an IP68 rating, tested in a lab at up to six meters for 30 minutes.

Apple warns that water resistance can weaken over time. Its care guidance advises against deliberate submersion or swimming with your iPhone. Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro?

The iPhone 18 Pro is worth considering if you are replacing an older phone and plan to use its camera controls often. Your case gets stronger when a new feature solves a problem you run into regularly, like needing manual aperture control or wanting to keep more footage on your device between transfers.

If you own an iPhone 17 Pro, keeping it is a reasonable starting point. First, check whether a software update or a battery service would address your main concern. Weigh the cost of upgrading against the value of the feature you actually plan to use.

If you are choosing between the two new Pro sizes, hold both in your hands before deciding. A bigger battery may matter more to you, or the smaller phone’s grip may feel better. Consider how the phone feels in daily use, not just the numbers on the spec sheet.
